 Question

An atheist is defined as the one who refutes religion and God.
Would be right to call Sri J Krishnamurti an atheist? If not, what is the difference the two?

 Sri Sri Swamiji's Answer

The difference between the view of J Krishnamurti and an atheist can be likened to that between opposite poles.

The atheist or non-believer denies everything that is about God and spirituality such as the existence of God, authenticity of scriptures, spiritual ideals, role of the Guru etc from a very superficial viewpoint. There is no honest, unbiased, open-minded probe into the deeper levels or a genuine yearning to find the truth. It is more out of hatred rather than open-mindedness.

The rational approach that J Krishnamurti advocates is one that is based on a genuine thirst to know and experience the ultimate truth. J Krishnamurti says that one should find the truth all by himself and not accept it just because it is written in the scriptures or it was told by the Guru. He says that if we simply accept it making no effort to progress it is a reflection of our laziness. It takes us nowhere. That is the context in which JK denies the word of scriptures, Guru or any set of predetermined principles. It is not due to hatred but due an absolutely unbiased, open-minded, sincere, focused approach to find the truth without any presumptions. This path too, if followed in the right way, will lead to liberation because that is the Ultimate Truth.

Besides, we can view JK in this way too.
God, out of His infinite mercy towards all beings, sends Mahatmas and saints to show them the way. The world is full of all kinds of people with varying interests, attitudes and preferences. Therefore Mahatmas too, vary their approach in order to show the Truth to people based on their varying attitudes. Sri Ramakrishna came for a particular purpose and Bhagavan Ramana came for another. Likewise, JK came to show the way for those people who were not oriented towards classical Sanatana dharma and had lost faith in such things.

Since we are all potentially divine to my knowledge GOD is an concept. All have to finally still their mind to realize that which is the only purpose of life and today we have deteriorated to understand this and hence to make us understand Religion should have formed for a progressive approach to the goal, we have systematically complicated the subject over a period of time so much that all the causes today is due to our own wrongful actions. This is what JK would have realized and should have mentioned and hence he cannot be considered as an atheist.

We are all like sky divers , when we are initially pushed from the plane to the sky we enjoy our aerobics and after some time we need to open our parachute to have safe landing or else the consequences will be severe like wise today our minds are like a close parachute which needs to be opened out to understand if not possible the simple prescription will be to surrender to our Guru.

An atheist is a person who does not accept god by merely saying god\'s existence but he want the presence of god to be proved. He wants scientific proof for everything. In one way he is better than us because he always think of god because he is afraid of the criticism he made against god. Philosophers and thinkers are also like this. They have their own ideas about everything. So we can't just say some one as atheist if he says something against god.

It will not be right to call J.K. an atheist. HE was a Gnani. HE was a realized person. He had his unique spiritual experience in August 1922 at a placed called OJAI in U.S.A. After vividly explaining his advaitic experience, he had the following to say:" The fountain of Truth has been revealed to me and the darkness dispersed. Love in all its glory has intoxicated my heart. My heart can never be closed. I have drunk at the fountain of Joy and eternal Beauty. I am God- intoxicated." This passage written by him in his letter immediately after his experience shows clearly that he is not an atheist.

Before trying to understand a Gnani like J.K. [which is not possible] we should have a clear understanding of "atheism and theism". Atheism, in common parlance, is understood to mean denying the existence of God. And theism means acceptance of existence of God. Applying the above definition, are we all atheists or theists?

In my humble understanding we are all atheists. We have intellectually accepted the existence of God. But watch our conduct; is it in consonance with our so called acceptance of existence of God? We get angry; we are greedy; we are jealous; we hanker after sensory pleasures; we have attachments and so on and so forth. We commit sins or mistakes within the confines of our homes. If we accept God and His existence, we should first of all know that God watches our thoughts and the resultant actions. On account of an intellectual acceptance of the existence of God, we can not be called theists.

Therefore theist is one who experiences God personally like the way J.K. did in August 1922 at Ojai in U.S. All others are atheists only. J.K. had repeatedly said that to understand that which is beyond time the formulations of the mind must stop. He had also proclaimed that God or Reality is to be discovered only when thought comes to an end.

An Atheist refuses the existence of a supreme power as the cause of the universe; and negates religion. He feels 'to see is to believe'. However, he believes in science - the explanations of scientists in this aspect. Most Atheists have not really 'seen' or taken efforts to experiment the scientific explanations in the same way as the Believers have not experimented religious teachings. [Here, let us keep away the fanatics - both believers and non-believers]. One has already arrived at the conclusion - God exists/does not exist - and then tends to prove his conviction right by quoting scriptures/scientists.

J.Krsihnamurti simply refused to accept any established doctrine and went on to seek out the Truth for himself. He took no effort to preach or convince anyone about his findings but when guidance was sought spoke about his thoughts and said each had to find his way. J.K. has said 'Truth is a pathless land'.

J.K can be called as a Gnani rather atheist, Simply because he never abuse any religion or god also his works were totally towards uplift of self by realising one himself/herself. Atheist who offends religion and Gnani who is religiously non religion.

To my very small understanding and knowledge, I think religion as we speak now is to harness people to  come to bhakti, Janna and ultimately to understand the truth, shedding all their worldly aspirations and pursue only the Truth which we call as God commonly. But for a person who dwells deep within this connotation of religion has no relevance and he goes beyond it. i.e. that person is at a level higher than that and he goes deep within to expound and experience that Truth, to be precise to be identify the inner self with that Truth, which is the ultimate goal of religion. So he has deep shraddha (faith) in that Truth. This cannot be attained unless that person had already involved in religious activities as prescribed by the sasthras, and was a deep baktha of the almighty (which ever name & form the almighty is worshiped) either in this janma or in the past. So I think that JK should have experienced this Truth & that's why he has his own understanding of Truth,& he is called as atheist. So basically he should be a theist. This is my humble thinking.

The be all and end all of the Aanmigam is Naathigam. Like the be all and end all of the Naathigam is Aanmigam. If u attain the highest knowledge as well as experience in Aanmigam/Naathigam u will realize, there is NO NAATHIGAM & NO AATHIGAM. We do not know the Spiritual/Naathiga (Atheist - as appears in this site)status of JK. So we cant predict what is the status of JK.

It is incorrect to believe that God has a special preference for any one language. Numerous devotees have sung and spoken to the Lord in their respective native languages and won His grace.
