 Question

We are worshiping God either in male form or female form according to one's wish. Many learned portray God as masculine. If it is so, is there a distinction between men and women in attaining God?

 Sri Sri Swamiji's Response

God is neither masculine nor feminine. He is above all such distinctions and everyone, male or female, has the equal right to attain Him. God is the One Supreme all-pervading Consciousness. Based on one’s wish and belief, this Supreme Consciousness is manifested either as male or as female.

Portraying God as male of female is for reasons of symbolisms and philosophical interpretation.

From the perspective of symbolism and philosophy, in general, this Supreme Consciousness is portrayed as male and the attitudes or the Siddhis of the aspirants to reach this Supreme Consciousness are portrayed as female.

For instance, Lord Muruga’s consorts are Valli and Deivanai.

Valli denotes pure love – her being Lord Muruga’s consort shows that the Infinite can be attained through pure untainted love (‘premai’). Deivanai denotes the Path of Yoga.

Likewise, Radha Devi denotes the selfless sacrifice and pure love as a means of attaining the Supreme Lord Krishna. The five brothers of Rukmini Devi denote the five senses that stand in the way of attaining the Almighty.

It is incorrect to believe that God has a special preference for any one language. Numerous devotees have sung and spoken to the Lord in their respective native languages and won His grace.
