Though not 100% sure, this is the information gathered through the internet. Veena is one of the three celestial musical instruments, having references from vedic times (along with Flute and Mridangam).
My favourite is the flute as it is blessed to be in the hands of Sri Krishna and is synonymous with Him!

I have heard by my Gurudev telling in his discourse that the three instruments which are referred in Vedas are Veena, Flute and Mridangam.

Though I know 3 musical instruments are mentioned in the vedas ..Veena, bansi(flute) and mridangam, on thinking I have the following to share.

Lord Nataraja has damaru(drums) in his hands; and anklets(salangai).

Conch(panchajanjam) held in Krishna's hand is also a musical instrument because it produces the sound OM..which is premordial first sound, called the Nada Brahman and the purest sound ever made.

The following information I gathered from the internet:-

Sama veda refers to Veena. The 24 frets in the veena representing the 24 syllables of Gayathri manthra; and in the yoga sasthra, the human body represents the veena and the 24 frets refer to the 24 in the spinal chord.

Natya sastra refers to:

String instruments - both bowed and plucked(chordophone - Tata vadhyams)- eg. kanda, godha and vana are names of different veena vadhyams

wind instruments - Sushira vadyas (Aerophones)-Toona, vamsi and nadi are different varieties of flute

percusion or skin covered vadhyams(Membrama phones, - Avanaada) Bhoomi dhundhubhi, dhundhubi and vanspati, madduka, dindima --- different variesties of drums

ghana and aghati - names of cymbols.

There are mentions about the sounds of natural forces like fire, air, thunder and water producing music

It is incorrect to believe that God has a special preference for any one language. Numerous devotees have sung and spoken to the Lord in their respective native languages and won His grace.
