 Question

'Sharanagati' (Surrender) -- Is it an action or a feeling?

 Sri Sri Swamiji's Answer

‘Sharanagati’ means surrendering not only one’s possessions, but also the possessor himself. It is not considered ‘Sharanagati’ as long as one does not surrender in entirety. One should have an unshakable faith to whom he surrenders. There should be no second thought about it, nor can one surrender to two different persons.

When we think of ‘Sharanagati’, it is not only important to see whom we surrender to; it is also equally important to see who he in turn surrenders to. If someone accepts ‘Sharanagati’ saying ‘Abhayam’ (which means ‘do not fear’), and he himself is affected by a multitude of emotional states like fear, anger, lust and hatred, the surrender does not make any sense. Only a Realized Soul is free from these states of mind as He has verily destroyed the mind. Thus one should surrender only to the Lord Almighty or to a Realized Soul.

Such a noble end-state does not come by easily. One has to perform innumerable Sadhanas to attain this state. Thus, though Sharanagati is purely a feeling, the approach involves actions.

It is a feeling that I have no separate entity to the one to whom I surrender and therefore do not a separate sankalpam

Sharanagati means surrendering himself.sharangati is surely a feeling, one must have the power and determination to surrend in front of the almighty.

It is an Action. Our emberumanaar has taught us how to act to obtai sharanagathi... only by strict and disciplined ACTIONS one can perform Prapatti or Sharanagati under the LOTUS FEET that too thro' ones Aharyan

Sharanagati is 100 % feelings. With out action we could make Sharangati with the feelings. In Sri Vibishanan's case feelings along with action coincide. But in Ravanan's case (since he was a swaroopam of Jayan) only feeling is there and the action would be opposite of his feelings. With out feelings only action is not a Sharanagati. It is called Vandanam / Namaskaram.

V.R.Krishnan

IT IS A FEELING INSIDE AND A TOTAL SURRENDER TO GOD WHILE PERFORMING KARMA AND BAKTHI.

Saranagati is selfless and total surrender. Saranagati(total surrender) is an voluntary action born out of feeling (bhakti/love). Hence it is feeling as well as action born out of feeling.

'Sharanagati' [surrender] is certainly not an act. It is not even a feeling. It is far beyond it. In the case of the Guru-sishya relationship when the Guru says, 'go by foot' [meaning no using any kind of vehicle] you just go by foot. The instruction of the Guru is transformed into action. There should not be any reasoning: not even the thought 'My Guru has asked me to go by foot. So I shall do it.' [illustration given by Sri Sri Swamiji]

As Sri Sri Swamiji explained in one of His talks with devotees 'complete surrender is found only in the case of a Bhakta who is the real Jnani and a Jnanai who is the real Bhakta, for, there is no sense of 'I' the doership in him/her.'

This is not possible in the case of ordinary mortals with insignificant faith. However, one need not feel saddened or discouraged by this. Practice of partial surrender [genuine reminder to oneself, time and again, that every happening has the seal of God/Guru on it and sincere effort to accept the events in one's life] will ultimately lead to complete surrender.

It is the inner feeling which appears in the form of action.

IT IS A FEELING. ACTION HS TO BE FROM THE HEART AND THAT IS WHY FEELING ONLY MATTERS FOR SHARANAGATI. ONLY ACTION WITHOUT FAITH IS USELESS. IT WOULD BE JUST A SHOW. SO I FEEL IT IS A FEELING.

Though this question can be answered by only those who surrendered themselves before satguru or God and I am definitely not one of them , I am making an humble effort to answer through intellectual understanding.

In absolute Sharanagati, it can be neither called an action nor a feeling. It is the witnessing state ( Oneness ) in which the devotee continues to be irrespective of the influences if any of actions or feelings or thoughts etc passing through him based on his prarabda karma

This can be understood from the statement of Bhagawan Yogi Ramsuratkumar "My Father alone Exists " He was always in that jeevan mukthi state since he surrendered everything.

Submission before Guru or repeated attempts to surrender may be at best indications for eventual surrender. A person who surrenders can neither act on his own nor can have his own feeling. It is all God /Guru only. Radhe Radhe

Feeling. Realisation/Surrender comes thro' feeling.Once v understand this feeling, then the belief on the spiritual world can be attained.

Bhagawan Yogiram Surat kumar has said
"Chanting Ram Naam always is Bhakthi"
"Chanting Ram Naam always is surrender, Chanting Ram Naam always is Mukthi (Liberation)"

In the case of Bhakta Prahlada he was chanting the Divine Name and did not seek any help when he was put to various hardships by his father Hiranyakasibhu and left it all to the Divine Will. Same is the case with Thirunavukarasar, who sung this hymn when he was tied to a rock and thrown in to the sea.

Sotrunai veedhiyan soodhi vaanavan
Potrunai thirundhadi porundha kai thozha
Katrunai pootiyoor kadalir paaichchinum
Natrunai aavadhu NAMASHIVAYAvee

Both were uttering the Divine Name constantly and remained unaffected by the happenings around them, they accepted everything as the happening of the Divine will and both were constantly chanting the Divine Name.

In the case of Girish Chandra Gosh he has given the power of attorney to his Guru, Bhagawan Ramakrishna as ordained by him. Then he could not perform any action according to his will and could only be a witness of the actions happening before him and there was no free will for him any more. He is always guided by the Supreme force, his Guru and he could experience the same.

Sri Sri Swamiji has said in a discourse on Sharanagathi that
"To bend down to all that God does to us - the way that He desires to keep us - accepting it without any expectation, without any opposition and offering ourselves to it totally (unconditionally) is the highest 'lakshana' (quality) of 'Sharanăgati'. That 'Sharanăgati' state had been attained by Girish Chandra Ghosh. Whenever any mishap befell him it did not affect him.

Instead, he thought, 'My Guru Maharaj is doing all these only to prepare me for something. These are all happening only for good'

Bhagawan Yogiram Surat kumar always used to say "Everything is happening according to the will and wish of my Father"

So i believe Sharanagathi is a nice feeling like Bhakthi and the person who is in the bliss can only experience the same.

From the above incidents in the life of Mahathmas we understand that constantly chanting the Divine Name and thinking about the Guru is Sharanagathi.

don't know the inner ultimate meaning but its a feeling where in a jeevatma says to GOD/GURU "enough is enough take me completely to you i am fed up of myself"

It is incorrect to believe that God has a special preference for any one language. Numerous devotees have sung and spoken to the Lord in their respective native languages and won His grace.
