‘Sharanagati’ means surrendering not only one’s possessions, but also the possessor
himself. It is not considered ‘Sharanagati’ as long as one does not surrender in entirety. One should have an unshakable faith to whom he surrenders. There should be no second thought about it, nor can one surrender to two different persons.
When we think of ‘Sharanagati’, it is not only important to see whom we surrender to; it is also equally important to see who
he in turn surrenders to. If someone accepts ‘Sharanagati’ saying ‘Abhayam’ (which means ‘do not fear’), and he himself is affected by a multitude of emotional states like fear, anger, lust and hatred, the surrender does not make any sense. Only a Realized Soul is free from these states of mind as He has verily destroyed the mind.
Thus one should surrender only to the Lord Almighty or to a Realized Soul.
Such a noble end-state does not come by easily. One has to perform innumerable Sadhanas to attain this state. Thus, though Sharanagati is purely a feeling, the approach involves actions.
