A mother sings lullaby and puts her child to sleep. If the child continues to sleep without waking up at the wakeup time she becomes anxious. She herself wakes up the child.
A person is asleep. He sees a wonderful dream of colossal buildings and towers and hears melodious music. If someone were to wake him up at this point of time he shouts in exasperation, “Oh, why did you wake me up now?” Nevertheless, if he dreams a tiger chasing him, crying out in fear, he wakes up without any assistance!
It is verily to attain His Lotus Feet that the Lord has created this world and bestowed innumerable comforts on us. Attainment of the Lord is verily the goal of human birth. Drowned in worldly pleasures like erudition, high office and money we remain oblivious of the Supreme Bliss: we have failed to strive towards this goal. With the deep compassion to bestow supreme Bliss on us the Lord sends sorrows like disease, death, humiliation, loss, etc. in our lives. At such times, developing dispassion through the realization that worldly comforts are petty, we should turn our attention to a life of spiritual endeavour.
From the life histories of those like Gautama Buddha, Bhagavaan Sri Ramana Maharishi we find that the sorrows of the world viz. old age, disease, death led them to dispassion and Jnana.
Likewise, life’s troubles should lead us to dispassion. No good would come out of feeling depressed or developing self-pity or questioning God. On the contrary, they would only push us into innumerable future births. Therefore, at times of trouble, cognizing the deep compassion of the Lord, one should strive to attain the Lotus Feet of the Lord.
