Bhagavatam study group
A Bhagavatam study group is conducted on the first Friday of every month between 8.00 – 9.00 pm at 9, Ridgemont Close, Cherrybrook NSW.
Srimad Bhagavatam is the last of 18 Puranas compiled by the great sage Veda Vyasa. Not finding peace even after codifying the Vedas and giving the world, the greatest epic Mahabharata, Sage Veda Vyasa composed this divine literature which shows the beautiful path of Bhagavata Dharma.
Consisting of 18000 verses across 12 cantos, this Purana was written by Sri Veda Vyasa and narrated to King Parikshit by Sage Suka in seven days, when the later faced a curse of death by the sting of a serpent.
Srimad Bhagavatam talks about Yoga, Jnana, Karma, Bhakti and various different paths, and primarily shows the path of Bhagavata Dharma, through the life histories of various great Bhagavatas like Dhruva, Ambarisha, Ajamila, Prahlada, etc., and also speaks about the various incarnations of the Lord.
The Eleventh Canto of Srimad Bhagavata consist of many rare gems of upadesas which throw light on the greatest philosophies. It expounds the bhagavata dharma and also discusses the grand way of life that leads one to bliss. The nava yogi upakhyana and Uddava Gita form the major part of the Eleventh Canto.
In 2011, the study group will continue to learn the Bhagavata dhyana slokas and the 5 stutis from Bhagavatam, in the order – Kunti Stuti, Bhishma Stuti, Dhruva Stuti, Prahlada Stuti, Gajendra Stuti.
Poornima will expound on Srimad Bhagavatam initially and then take the Eleventh canto for detailed exploration in English. Most of the slokas will be dealt and study materials shall be provided.
